Website design & development agenciesChoose the team. Then build what’s next.

The homepage mockup is the fun part. The right partner also asks about your buyers, content, systems, search traffic and the people who will run the website afterward.

Find the team that makes sense for the work ahead.

The short answer.

Compare website agencies on strategy, content, design, development, migration and post-launch responsibility. This guide covers Bop Design, Carbon, Clay, Huemor, Orbit Media, SmartSites and WebFX. Start with the job the website needs to do, then compare relevant work and a proposal from the people who would deliver it.

Get specific before the quote.

What kind of website
are you buying?

Design, development and optimization are related jobs. Agree on which ones you need and who is doing them.

Seven agencies.
Different starting points.

These agencies approach the website from different angles. A relevant example and a clear delivery plan will tell you more than a long capabilities list.

Work backward from the work

What needs to change?

The story is unclear.

A new template will still need to explain the offer. Resolve audience, positioning and the important page content early enough to inform the design.

Bring it into the conversation: Ask for a sitemap and sample page brief before signing off on the visual direction.

The site is hard to use or maintain.

Identify the actual tasks: finding a product, requesting a quote, publishing an article or updating a disclosure. The platform should serve those tasks.

Bring it into the conversation: Ask the proposed team to walk through both a customer journey and an editor’s workflow.

The business cannot afford a messy launch.

Make migration and testing part of the project. Search destinations, integrations, forms and content ownership deserve named owners.

Bring it into the conversation: Request the URL map, acceptance checklist, launch responsibilities and post-launch support terms.

From browsing to briefing

Compare the parts that can get missed.

A website proposal should make the work—and your team’s contribution—easy to understand.

A portfolio screenshot does not prove the agency built every part of the site or currently maintains it. Ask about its exact role, the original constraints and the team proposed for your project.

How we chose the agencies

A considered starting point.

Agency sources were reviewed on October 7, 2026. This is a curated set for teams choosing a website design and development partner for B2B, healthcare, ecommerce or financial services, not a complete list of the market or a scored test of delivery quality.

Agency services, teams and terms can change. Verify the current details before hiring. Tell Carbon about a factual correction.

  • Relevant public evidence. Each agency publishes website design or development services with a portfolio or service description. Inclusion does not establish suitability for every platform, integration or regulated workflow.
  • A useful range of approaches. The set includes B2B specialists, integrated marketing teams, digital-experience designers and website optimization partners. Ask how each approach fits your content, technology and internal team.
  • The same comparison format. Every profile includes a published focus, a reason to explore, a question to ask and direct source links. Alphabetical order does not indicate preference.
  • Clear limits. We did not interview or audit these agencies for this guide. Their own statements are not independent verification of results. Inclusion does not imply endorsement of Carbon.
  • No guessed commercial terms. Request current pricing, staffing and availability directly. Carbon’s published pricing applies to Carbon only.

Before you reach out

A few things worth asking.

Should we choose the platform before the agency?

Define the requirements first. Existing systems or internal skills may make the platform a real constraint. If the choice is open, ask each agency to explain the tradeoffs and ongoing maintenance needs.

Do we need a redesign or conversion optimization?

If the structure, content or technology prevents the website from doing its job, a rebuild may be appropriate. If the foundation works, targeted improvements may be a better starting point. Diagnose the problem before choosing the scope.

Does a new website guarantee better search rankings?

No. Content, technical implementation, migration and many external factors affect search. Ask for relevant launch checks and ongoing monitoring rather than a ranking promise.

What should a website cost?

Carbon quotes projects around your needs and timing. Retainers start as low as $5,000/month. That is general engagement guidance, not a fixed package for every service. Ask each agency for a current proposal with deliverables, staffing, exclusions and terms.

How do we compare agencies across different industries?

Bring the specific audience, user journey, content requirements and systems. Request a relevant example and an explanation of the agency’s role rather than assuming an industry logo proves every capability.
